Tenino Young-at-Heart Theatre purchased land to build multiuse center in downtown Tenino.
Tenino Young-at-Heart theatre (TYT) has purchased land and plans to build a theatre in Tenino! The property is located at the center of town in the Tenino Creative District, on Sussex between Keithahn and Ritter. An anonymous donor, TYT’s biggest fan, generously gifted the funds for the property purchase. Now, TYT begins the work of writing grants and seeking the community’s financial support to create this wonderful resource. Establishing the physical theater space will further embolden TYT’s mission of cultivating community, building relationships, and promoting growth through the joy of theatre.
Tenino Mayor Wayne Fournier said, “Over the years I’ve seen many TYT performances, and I am beyond excited with this news. TYT has joined in as part of a greater effort to build on the creative sector in Tenino after the establishment of Tenino as a State certified creative district. Having a performing arts center as a centerpiece to our amazing downtown will pay dividends to our community for generations in more way than we have yet to understand.”
TYT is working with an architect and consultant to build a facility that will blend with Tenino’s charm and support the arts and other community events.
Founded in 1990, TYT started with the McKenzieSullivan family children putting on a neighborhood play “Johnny Appleseed.” The summer productions grew from there, to include teens and adults, and has been a staple of the Tenino community ever since. Without a permanent space, shows have been held in the high school commons for years.
The Managing Director and TYT founder, Bob McKenzieSullivan, holds this vision dear to his heart. “I love how theatre can help people of all ages find new skills and creativity that they did not even know they had.” Many people of all ages have participated, and their amazing stories are woven into the beautiful tapestry that is TYT.
TYT is currently in rehearsals for their summer musical ‘A Year with Frog and Toad.’ In a unique setting, performances will be held in the Tenino Quarry Pool site July 15-25. Tickets will be available on their website by the end of June.
A celebration of the property purchase will be held on the site September 18th. More information can be found on their Facebook page. Donations can be made via Paypal on their website TeninoYoungAtHeartTheatre.org, or mailed to TYT, PO Box 202, Rochester, WA 98579.
